Why do so many Americans today try to ignore Japanese atrocities?

Okay, most Americans always say that Japan is awesome, Japan is cool, I would love to visit Japan one day...but they never seem to bring up Japan's own atrocities and murderous past. I know we should all try to forgive, but, just out of curiosity - no one here seems to find countries like Germany "awesome" or appealing, and everyone here seems to focus on the Holocaust, but not on any of the brutal massacres Japan committed...why is this, exactly?
