Why do extremists yell out 'Allah Akbar' (God is Great) before they commit an atrocity?

I see this all the time on television of mostly Muslim extremists who yell out this phrase before they blow up themselves, or in particular target innocent bystanders in there tirade of death, to inflict as much harm to others and there selves before dying. What is the reasoning behind this?
