If i bought star trek online can i play the demo instead of down loading it?

OK so my friend gave me star trek online its never been opened i decided to subscribe today but what i thought was a game code is actually a retail code so the games registered but i have to purchase a game card an i have no money so can i just play the demo on the cd without all the downloading.
