How Does Star Trek: The Original Series Compare to Babylon 5?

I've just finished the final season of Babylon 5 and and thinking about watching the various Star Trek series. I was wondering sort of what was the same/different about the two. I loved Babylon 5 and it's my absolute favorite show so how do you think I'd like ST? Also, can someone who is NOT a trekkie please tell me how good the show is? I only ask because I feel people get too attached to these old shows and only say they're amazing because they don't want anything new to overtake the genre as "the best," even when they obviously are.
