Do you believe that many religious people use God and their religion as an excuse to be and act petty minded.?

I have noticed on quite many occasions that persons claiming to be religious or devoted to their God/s are angered and lash out using insults of every kind at those questioning their beliefs or the validity of their God/s as if what they believe in should not be tested or tried but they are free to condemn everyone who does not share their views.Are these people deluding themselves or do they believe that they actually have a right to look down on others because of some religious superiority?
